Hair Transplant Surgery

Hair transplant is an outpatient surgical procedure that involves the transplantation of hair follicles from one part of the body — known as the donor area — to another, known as the recipient area. This method can permanently restore the hair of men and women who are experiencing partial baldness and suffering from hair loss.

Hair transplant surgery has become increasingly popular in recent years due to technological advancements, affordable prices, and the in-depth expertise of Iranian doctors.

What Are the Different Hair Transplant Procedures Available?

There are various types of hair transplant methods currently available to restore natural hair for those who are experiencing hair loss. The proper procedure for you will depend on the type of hair loss you have and the number of grafts you want.

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT, Follicular Unit Strip Surgery, Strip Harvesting)

FUT is sometimes known as follicular unit strip surgery (FUSS) and is a transplantation technique. In this method, the surgeon removes a piece of skin from the donor area (usually the back of the patient’s head) and then covers it with stitches. The hair follicles will be extracted from this area. Then, the surgeon divides the scalp strip into smaller fragments, which are called grafts. The procedure will complete by implanting these grafts on the recipient sites where have been already specified.

The quantity of grafts that a patient receives depends on the type and quality of the hair as well as the transplant size.

FUT procedure is suitable for:

  • Individuals with partial baldness
  • Individuals with a receding hairline
  • Individuals with traction alopecia

Treatment Duration for FUT Procedure

The treatment duration is about 4 to 6 hours, and the recovery time depends on the patient’s case.

Recovery Time for FUT Treatment

The recovery time varies between individuals, but the patient can go back to work within ten days.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

Follicular unit extraction (FUE) is the most popular hair transplantation method for individuals who want to regain hair in their bald or thinning areas. In this procedure, the donor area (usually the back of the patient’s head) is shaved down, and the surgeon harvests the hair follicles under local anesthesia. Then, the surgeon makes tiny holes in the scalp area receiving the hair transplant and delicately places hairs in these holes.

FUE procedure is suitable for:

  • Those who are balding or who have thinning hair
  • Men and women with a receding hairline
  • people who lost hair due to a head injury

Treatment Duration for FUE Procedure

The treatment duration depends on the transplant size that a patient requires and usually takes about 4 to 6 hours, and the stitches will be removed about ten days after surgery. Although the surgeon may transplant hundreds or even thousands of hairs during one treatment session, a patient may require up to three or four sessions to achieve the full head of hair that he/ she desires. Sessions occur several months apart to allow each transplant to be healed completely.

Recovery Time for FUE Treatment

  • Around two weeks after the surgery, a patient may experience some redness, tenderness, and swelling.
  • The patient can usually resume light activities after two days and return to work three days after the surgery. After about one month, the patient can resume exercising, including swimming.
  • Soft hats can be worn after ten days, but hard hats should only be worn four weeks after treatment.

Direct Hair Implantation (DHI)

Direct hair implantation, or DHI, is an innovative hair transplant technique for individuals who want to restore their hair loss. In this minimally-invasive procedure, the surgeon takes a hair follicle, graft, from a donor site, usually the back or side of the patient’s head, and then implants it into a recipient area that may be bald or thin.

This method differentiates from the other hair transplant methods, as it involves the implementation of grafts and will provide a natural look with minor scarring.

Like these different procedures, though, direct hair implantation is minimally-invasive and produces a natural look with little scarring.

Before the surgery, the patient receives local or complete anesthesia, which will numb the area of the head that the surgeon wants to work on. Then, the surgeon extracts the hair follicles manually using a unique tool with a diameter of 1mm or less, depending on the patient’s case.

After the extraction of hair follicles, they are loaded into an implanter tool which allows the follicles to be directly implanted into the recipient area of the head. This tool also provides the surgeon more control over the angle, direction, and depth of the hair transplantation, leading to a more natural look for the patient.

DHI procedure is suitable for:

  • Men and women with a receding hairline
  • Individuals with traction alopecia
  • Individuals with partial baldness

Treatment Duration for DHI procedure

The treatment duration usually takes between 4–8 hours, depending on the amount of hair implantation needed.

Recovery Time for DHI Treatment

  • Around two weeks after the surgery, a patient may experience some redness, tenderness, and swelling.
  • The patient can usually resume light activities after two days and return to work three days after the surgery. After about one month, the patient can resume exercising, including swimming.
  • Soft hats can be worn after ten days, but hard hats should only be worn four weeks after treatment.
